Artistic Lab in Korçë – Understanding Narrative Techniques / Book Discussion

On October 19, 2024, the “Artistic Lab: Understanding Narrative Techniques” took place at the “Thimi Mitko” Library in Korçë, as part of the “Beyond Boundaries: Empowering Youth through Reading and Literature” project. The activity focused on the novel “And Then She Became a Tree” by Loer Kume and aimed to engage youth in exploring narrative techniques and the cultural significance of literature.
The event opened with welcoming remarks from the leaders of the Literary and Cultural Activism Association, who underscored the project’s objectives and highlighted the importance of engaging youth in literary discussions as a way to broaden their cultural perspectives. Jordia Tollkuci, director of the “Thimi Mitko” Library, emphasized that through reading and literary discussions, young people could develop a stronger sense of solidarity and understanding between cultures, viewing literature not only as a tool for education but also as a bridge that connects people more closely.
Following the opening remarks, the author, Loer Kume, shared his creative journey behind “And Then She Became a Tree.” Kume’s narrative, which delves into the complexities of existence and human relationships, introduces the protagonist Marta through a cyclical structure that begins with her end, creating a reflective and introspective atmosphere. The author elaborated on the symbolism of roots and the act of “pruning,” where Marta sheds the excess in search of the essence of her existence—a process leading her to a deeper understanding of love and sacrifice. Participants actively engaged in the event by reading selected excerpts from the novel. These readings, performed by students and young attendees, reinforced the emotional and symbolic depth of the text, sparking a lively discussion.

During the open discussions, participants shared their thoughts on the impact of the novel’s narrative techniques and themes on their everyday lives. The youth expressed their appreciation for the book and literature as a means to better understand the world around them, experiencing it through diverse perspectives. The activity concluded with closing remarks from Ms. Tollkuci, who encouraged the youth to continue reading and to see literature as an inexhaustible source of reflection and personal growth. She emphasized its role in contributing to the creation of a more empathetic and conscious society.

This event successfully highlighted the power of literature to inspire meaningful conversations and personal development, reinforcing the value of narrative as a tool for understanding and connecting across cultures.
